Maine lawmakers on Thursday sent a draft of gun safety measures to the governor to sign into law, fulfilling a promise to take swift action designed to prevent mass shootings such as a rampage last year that killed 18 people in the city of Lewiston.

Democratic Maine Gov. Janet Mills said Monday she will allow one of a final pair of gun safety bills — a waiting period for gun purchases — to become law without her signature in the wake of the Lewiston mass shooting.

Maine lawmakers voted to pass gun safety measures to make firearms harder to procure. Six month ago the state experienced its worst mass shooting in Lewiston.
